Why austere?

According to the Sage English Dictionary and Thesaurus, the adjective austere is defined as
• Practicing great self-denial
• Severely simple

As I look back on my life, austerity seems to be the one common denominator that best describes my 'station' in life.

As a child growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa, my parents very seldom had enough money to pay for any real luxuries, however we made do with what we had and that is how I learnt to accept and indeed embrace austerity. Being a member of a minority within a minority within a minority (follow this link for an explanation), I subconsciously accepted austerity.

As an adult living in South Africa, being a minority within a minority within a minority within a minority within a minority, I again (subconsciously) accepted austerity.

As an adult living in Australia, I began to understand that not being in the 'mainstream' made bucking austerity an almost futile exercise. Which I suppose explains why the Ripose Technique that I developed fitted the austerity model rather well.

Then again, no matter how much wealth a person has, we cannot take it with us.
